Life at
45 North
Photos.
Stories.
The occasional thought worth keeping.

Life at 45 North is a collection of photographs, stories, and observations from Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. Some are from morning walks with Norman and Henry. Some are from back roads, quiet lakes, and forgotten trails. All of them come from a place we're fortunate enough to call home.

The trail doesn't owe you anything
Most mornings start the same way. A couple dogs, a camera, and a trail I've walked more times than I can count. Some days the light is perfect. Some days a deer steps out of the woods. Some days the fog settles exactly where it should. And some days nothing happens at all. I've learned that's part of the deal. The trail doesn't owe you a great photo. It doesn't owe you a sunrise or a story. Sometimes the reward is simply being there. The Northeast Kingdom has a way of teachin

After the Rain
Everything looks better after the rain. The colors are deeper. The air feels cleaner. The woods seem quieter somehow. Maybe because rain forces everything to slow down for a little while. Not every storm leaves damage. Some leave perspective. And sometimes that's exactly what was needed.

The Dogs Always Know the Way
I've spent enough mornings walking with dogs to know they understand something people often forget. They don't worry about getting somewhere. They're interested in what's happening right now. The smell in the grass. The stick in the trail. The sound in the woods. The dogs never come home disappointed that the walk wasn't productive. There's probably a lesson in that.

Things the Woods Teach You
The woods don't care how busy you are. They don't care about deadlines, politics, or how many unread emails are waiting when you get back. They just keep doing what they've always done. Growing. Changing. Waiting. Every walk seems to end with the same reminder: Most things don't need to happen as fast as we think they do.

Why Some People Never Leave the Northeast Kingdom
People ask why anyone stays here. The winters are long. The roads can be rough. The nearest anything is usually farther away than you'd like. And yet people stay. Not because it's easy. Because it feels real. There are places designed to impress visitors. And there are places designed to become home. The Northeast Kingdom has never tried very hard to be the first one.

The Best Part of the Day Happens Before Most People Wake Up
The best part of the day isn't usually the biggest part. It's the ten minutes before the world gets busy. The coffee isn't finished. The phone isn't ringing. The roads are quiet. The dogs are ahead on the trail, following scents that seem more important than schedules. Most mornings in the Northeast Kingdom start this way. And most mornings remind me that life doesn't always need more noise. Sometimes it just needs a little more attention. You don't have to live at 45° North
